National Recognition for TMLA Seniors

Grace Brock, Kristen Chuber, Jessica Roster and Gabrielle Saggese, all seniors at The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, have received Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation based on the outstanding scores they received on the 2006 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.


Seniors Anastasia Appleton, Brittany Denley and Jeanetta Green were named outstanding students by the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes exceptional black American high school students.


Lesley Velazquez, also a senior, was named a scholar in the National Hispanic Recognition Program.

CLocal Dominican Academy Students Named AP Scholars

Nineteen students at Dominican Academy, Manhattan, including 11 from the Diocese of Brooklyn, have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement (AP) Program Exams. Students took AP Exams in May, 2007, after completing challenging college-level courses.


Nora Moran (St. Joseph, Long Island City) qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.


Karolina Chojnowska (St. Stanislaus Kostka, Greenpoint), Stephanie Loria (Sacred Heart, Glendale), Madeleine Metzler (Sacred Heart, Glendale), Amanda Nocera (Holy Family, Fresh Meadows) and Andrea Popovech (Most Precious Blood, Long Island City) qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.


Eileen Kidder (St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights), Natalie Kiyashka (Our Lady of Mercy, Forest Hills), Alexandra Lotero (Queen of Angels, Sunnyside), Sylvia Pogorzelska (Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Williamsburg) and Aleksandra Prokop (St. Stanislaus Kostka, Greenpoint) qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher.


Dominican Academy offers 12 AP courses for students who want to earn college credits or enter college with an advanced standing. The courses prepare students for college curriculum and strengthen their problem-solving and writing skills.



St. Saviour Freshman Offsets Tuition with Columbus Scholarship


Gina Ricevuto, a freshman at St. Saviour H.S., Park Slope, and member of the parish church, received a Columbus Citizens Foundation Scholarship to offset tuition costs this school year. She was chosen based on her Italian heritage, service to her community and school and good grades. The Foundation is committed to preserving the Italian-American heritage and supporting philanthropic causes. Ricevuto, right, is commended by school Principal Sister Valeria Belanger, SSND.


FHA Fights for the Cure

Fontbonne Hall Academy senior Alessandra Cerchione collected over $4,000 for the fight against breast cancer last fall.


A member of the National Honor Society, Cerchione sponsored a project at her Bay Ridge school with the assistance of family friend, Roberta Server of the Play for Pink Foundation, an organization affiliated with the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund. Server donated 700 pink bracelets and inspiring charms. Cerchione and other NHS members then sold the donated items in homerooms and the cafeteria. All proceeds went to the breast cancer organization.

St. Sebastian’s Artist-in-Residence

Congratulations to fifth-grader Shannon Garcia at St. Sebastian School, Woodside, whose drawing of a teddy bear appears on the cover of a new children’s book, Two Stories About Kirmayir: A Very Cute Bear by Jeffrey S. Students at The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates, completed varied giving programs for the less fortunate during Christmas. Pax Christi sponsored a clothing drive and food and paper goods collection. The CSJ Leadership Homerooms collected games, toys and fashion accessories for pre-teen girls in St. John’s Bread and Life Program. Medical Unlimited sold red ribbons on behalf of Christa House to benefit homeless people living with AIDS. Outreach, the school’s social service organization collected used eyeglasses for developing nations and food and paper goods for food pantries. All homerooms wrote cards to American war veterans.


Jovenes de Valor is reaching out to young people in a new way. On the last Saturday of each month, there will be a Youth Mass followed by an evening of fellowship at Café con Cristo at SS. Peter and Paul Church, Williamsburg. The first Mass and Café event is set for Jan. 26, 7 p.m. Celebrant: Auxiliary Bishop Frank Caggiano. Nazareth R.H.S., Flatbush, a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School, is holding a Scholarship Entrance Exam, Feb. 9, 8:30 - 11:30 a.m., for eighth-graders who didn’t take the TACHS Exam. “Where Is the Love?” is the theme for a yearlong Common Union Young Adult Revival that kicks off Feb. 9 at St. John the Baptist, Bed-Stuy.
