Sister M. Phyllis McCarty, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died Jan. 17 at Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton, PA. She died one month short of her 86th birthday.
Born in Brooklyn, she entered the IHM Congregation in 1939, made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1942 and her final profession on Aug. 2, 1945.
She taught at St. Ephrem’s School, Dyker Heights, 1956-60, as well as in schools in Pennsylvania, Delaware, upstate New York, and on Long Island – St. Peter of Alcantara, Port Washington, 1953-56; St. Dominic H.S., Oyster Bay, 1970-78; and Maria Regina Diocesan H.S., Uniondale, 1978-84.
From 2001 until the time of her death she served as a prayer minister at the IHM Center, Marian Convent and Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton.
She received a bachelor of science degree in education and a master of science degree in theology both from Marywood College and a master of arts degree in history from Villanova University.
She is survived by two sisters, Patricia Howard of Livingston, N.J.; Kathryn Lawrence of Virginia Beach, VA.; and a brother, Robert and sister-in-law, Jill, both of Clarks Summit, PA.
Burial was in Moscow, PA.
Sister Helen Galvin, SSND, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Wilton, CT, for 71 years, died Jan. 28, at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton. She was 87.
In 1939, she took the religious name Sister Mary Leopoldine, though she later returned to her baptismal name. In 1940, she took her first vows.
She taught at St. Anselm School, Bay Ridge, from 1970 to 1976.
Brother Aubin (Joseph Eugene) Hart, CFX, a member of the Xaverian Brothers since 1937, died Feb. 1. he was 89 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, he pronounced his final vows in 1942, the same year he graduated from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He did graduate studies at St. John’s University, Jamaica.
He taught at St. Xavier, Louisville; Mount St. Joseph, Baltimore; and Flaget H.S. Locally, he taught math at Nazareth H.S., Flatbush; and then helped set up the computer program at Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge.
He retired at Xaverian in 1994 but continued to live and be active there until his death.
“Brother Aubin Hart was greatly appreciated at Xaverian, having that priceless gift of bridging the gap between the generations through a genuine kindness and a sharp wit,” said Dr. Salvatore Ferrera, president of Xaverian.
A photographer, Brother Aubin was known as “Johnny on the spot” when it came to taking photos at Xaverian events.
Sister Maria Wittenborn, S.C., a Sister of Charity, Halifax, for 50 years, died at Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, Jan. 28. She was 70 years old.
Formerly known as Sister John Rosanne, she entered the congregation from St. Sylvester parish, New Lots.
In the Brooklyn Diocese, she served as principal at Our Lady Help of Christians, Midwood, 1970-82, and Resurrection-Ascension, Rego Park, 1982-86.
Immediate survivors include her sister Roseanne and husband Walter Eisenstark of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; her brother Walter of Smithtown, L.I.; brother Ernest and his wife Joanne of Greensboro, N.C.; and cousin, Father James L. Tighe, pastor of Queen of Peace parish, Kew Gardens.
Burial was in the Sisters of Charity plot in St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.
