Celebrating Catholic Schools

Linda Busetti Photos

A CLOSING MASS to end the celebration of Catholic Schools Week was held at St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn, on Sunday, Feb. 3. (See story here) Students from schools around the diocese processed in with banners from St. Elizabeth, Ozone Park; St. Nicholas, Williamsburg; St. Adalbert, Elmhurst; Our Lady of Grace, Howard Beach; St. Gregory the Great, Crown Heights; and St. Rose of Lima, Rockaway Beach.

At the conclusion of Mass, Father Kevin Sweeney, director of the Vocation Office, honored the winners of the Vocations Awareness Essay and Poster Contest, which was co-sponsored by the diocesan Education and Vocation offices. Six winners were selected from among 600 entries.

One of the winners in the poster category was first-grader Joseph Underwood of Our Lady of Grace School, Gravesend, shown above receiving his certificate from Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio.
