90th Anniversary of Fatima Apparitions

The Brooklyn-Queens division of the World Apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima, popularly known as The Blue Army, will mark the 90th anniversary of the Blessed Mother’s first apparition at Fatima, Portugal, with a Mass at St. Matthias Church, Ridgewood, on Saturday, May 12, at 7 p.m.

A reception will follow in the parish hall, said the group’s chaplain, Father Alfred R. Guthrie.

There also will be a diocesan celebration commemorating the final apparition at Fatima with a Mass celebrated at St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn, on Saturday morning, Oct. 13.

“Our poor world seems to be plunging more and more deeply into darkening threats of widening wars, a nuclear arms buildup, confusion about sexual morality, promiscuity, growing divisions between the rich and poor and financial instability, not to mention the far worse danger of the eternal loss of many souls in hell,” said Father Guthrie.

“The prophetic call of the Mother of God at Fatima in 1917 for prayer, especially the Rosary, obedience to God, penance, reconciliation, the salvation of souls and true world peace summons us ever more urgently to a renewed and fervent response.”

Volunteers are needed to assist at the Masses. They are invited to attend a special meeting after First Saturday devotions at St. Matthias, on March 3, at 8:30 a.m.
