Charities Backs Tax Credit Drive

Catholic Charities is cooperating with the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs in the city’s fifth annual Earned Income Tax Credit campaign, which helps working families and individuals earning less than $38,000 to claim refunds of as much as $6,000 when filing their taxes.

Father Alfred P. LoPinto, Vicar for Human Services, said that Catholic Charities, as a sponsoring agency for the campaign, has sent information to parishes in the diocese, asking them to make parishioners aware of the possible federal, state and city tax benefits.

The initiative is a means of attacking the problems of poverty in an innovative way, Father LoPinto said. Catholic Charities is part of a coalition of l50 not-for-profit, government and private organizations promoting the program.

Information on the Earned Income Tax Credit, the qualifications for applying and locating convenient free tax assistance sites is available by calling 311 or visiting the Web site at www.nyc.gov/eitc. Materials are available in 11 languages.
