Mass Will Commemorate New Focus on Spirituality

Auxiliary Bishop Frank J. Caggiano will be the principal celebrant and homilist of a Mass at St. James Cathedral-Basilica on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. commemorating the creation of a single, unified spirituality center for the Diocese of Brooklyn.

The SS. Peter and Paul Spirituality Center at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston and the Centro de Evangelizacion, 118 Congress St., Brooklyn, will form the unified center, which will utilize both locations.

Father Joseph G. Fonti, the pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Williamsburg, will formally assume the directorship of the center Sept. 1. He has a degree in spiritual theology from the Pontifical Teresianum in Rome.

Participating in the Mass will be persons associated with the movements and groups the centers have served over the years. These include the English and Spanish Cursillos, the Jornadas de Vida Cristiana, Jovenes de Valor, Encuentro Matrimoniales, Movimiento Familiar Cristiano, Retrovaille, World Wide Marriage Encounter, Engaged Encounter and men and women recovery retreat programs.

The work and mission of the movements and communities presently served by the two centers will remain unchanged.

Father Fonti said the Mass will also commemorate the death of the founder of the Cursillo Movement, Eduardo Bonnin, who died in February at age 90 in Spain, where the movement was founded. The diocese has conducted Cursillos for more than 40 years.

The aim of the merger of the two diocesan entities is to create a more effective diocesan spirituality resource for all the people of the diocese, Father Fonti said.

Father Fonti said the center will also serve to foster greater spiritual growth in the diocesan clergy and increase awareness and support for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, a priority for the diocese emphasized in Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio’s pastoral letter on the New Evangelization issued last October.
