Hundreds followed cross bearer David Galalis from St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn, in the annual Good Friday Way of the Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge to ground zero. The event is sponsored by Communion and Liberation. Bishop Ignatius Catanello prayed with the pilgrims at St. James. Stations of the Cross were recited atop the bridge, on the sidewalk outside City Hall and across from ground zero before the procession made its way to St. Peter’s Church on Barclay St.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio commemorated Good Friday in Borough Park, where he led the Stations of the Cross in an outdoor procession from St. Frances de Chantal Church to St. Catharine of Alexandria Church.
Hundreds of parishioners packed St. Frances’ pews and aisles for the 7 p.m. liturgy, conducted in Polish. Costumed children then led the candlelit walk which followed. Anna Szostek, 13, and Katarzyna Surdel, 13, above, bore an image of Christ wearing a crown of thorns, and Angelika Bastrzyk, 11, carried a crown of thorns.

The bishop walked with Father Canon Andrzej Kurowski, SAC, and Msgr. Kevin Noone, episcopal vicar of Brooklyn West.

In Ridgewood, eight surrounding parishes came together for the annual Good Friday procession that steps off from Our Lady of Miraculous Medal. The mass of over 300 people braved the cold and high winds, traveling through the neighborhood carrying banners, candles, religious icons and rosaries. The Coastal Patrol Cadet Corps from St. Brigid, Bushwick, led the procession.

The event concluded in the parish hall with a Good Friday service. Participating parishes in addition to Our Lady of Miraculous Medal and St. Brigid were St. Matthias and St. Aloysius, Ridgewood; St. Margaret and Our Lady of Hope, Middle Village; St. Pancras and Sacred Heart, Glendale.
