Write on Target at Nazareth

Recognizing that excellent writing skills are key to success in college and most career paths, Nazareth Regional High School, a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School in Flatbush, recently unveiled the first-ever student-staffed writing center in a Brooklyn high school.

The new Writing Center is a pilot program being implemented this spring in partnership with St. John’s University, which will oversee the center’s implementation and the training of a staff of 10 juniors. Currently, the center is open from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. The full program will begin in September.

When students go to the on-site center for assistance, the emphasis is on “writing to learn” versus the old model of “learning to write.” Students have the opportunity to work independently or receive assistance on term papers, college essays, test preparation, resumes, research and re-writes of projects.

As young men and women develop their writing skills, they’ll gain confidence in their ability to write on the high school as well as college level.

Since Nazareth students run the Writing Center, the student body is sharing in the responsibility for their own learning by assisting each other to become proficient and competent writers.

Juniors running the center have been trained at St. John’s University and mentors from the university have visited the school to assist in setting up the center. Nazareth faculty is participating by creating assignments which require students to utilize the new facility.

“This whole school effort is creating a good deal of excitement from both students and teachers,” says Barbara Gil, principal. “The first student instructors will be making history by being part of this groundbreaking event.”

Knights Receive Their Rings

The Knights of the Holy Cross High School Class of 2009 in Flushing reached a milestone when they received their class rings and pins at a Mass celebrated by Father Frank Schwarz, school chaplain. Class President Diego Cardoso-Pereira urged fellow juniors to reflect on what the occasion means to them as individuals and as Holy Cross Men.

Junior Christopher Vitale designed the class pin.

Audience Chooses Bonnie for Best Bard Monologue

Tricia Gaya won over her audience at the English Speaking Union’s annual citywide Shakespeare Contest for her interpretation of Mistress Page’s monologue in “The Merry Wives of Windsor.”

Although judges didn’t recognize her among the winners, the audience voted the sophomore at Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, as their favorite performer. She’s congratulated, above, by Joan Cargiulo, speech coach, left, and Sister Dolores Crepeau, C.S.J., principal, and Gilda King, assistant principal, at right, as she holds her “People’s Choice Award,” a bust of the Bard.
