90th Anniversary of Fatima Apparitions

The 90th anniversary of the Blessed Mother’s first appearance at Fatima, Portugal, will be commemorated on Saturday, May 12, at St. Matthias Church, Ridgewood.

A holy hour of Eucharistic adoration and recitation of the Rosary will begin at 5:30 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 7 p.m. by Father Alfred R. Guthrie, diocesan chaplain of the World Apostolate of Our Lady of Fatima, popularly known as the Blue Army. The services will be multi-lingual. A light reception will follow in the parish hall.

Preparations also will continue that evening for the celebration in October at St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn, of Mary’s final apparition at Fatima.

“As a rising tide of pornography, the disintegration of the family, abortion, and other forms of violence, and the growing threat of another war, worse than any we have already endured, loom over our poor world, the pressing need to listen to Our Blessed Mother’s urgent plea for prayer, especially the Rosary, conversion, penance, and devotion to the Most Blessed Sacrament for the salvation of souls and true world peace is clearly more and more urgent than ever,” said Father Guthrie. “As bad as the present situation looks, we need to remember that this is the time for mercy, and that nothing is impossible with God.”

For more information about the celebrations or the planning meeting, call Father Guthrie at St. Matthias rectory, 718-821-6447.
