Papal Visit Celebrated in Greenpoint

Students at St. Stanislaus Kostka School, Greenpoint, didn’t get to meet Pope Benedict XVI in person but they enthusiastically celebrated his visit to New York in April with their own festivities — a cake in honor of Pope Benedict’s 81st birthday, balloons, and a pope look-alike contest, above.

Celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi by taking part in St. Sebastian parish’s solemn Corpus Christi Procession through the streets of Woodside on Sunday, May 25.

The procession starts after 1:15 p.m. Mass and travels down 58th St., left on 41st Dr. to 60th St., on to 41st Ave. and back to 58th St. The procession will end with Benediction at St. Sebastian’s. For more information, call 718-429-4442.

Coney Island Night, a fundraiser to benefit seniors, will be held at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Ridgewood, on Friday, June 6, 7-11 p.m.

The proceeds go to the Ridgewood-Glendale Cluster Senior Rent Assistance Fund, which is administered by representatives of St. Matthias, Sacred Heart, St. Pancras, OLMM and St. Aloysius parishes.

$15 includes hot dogs, knishes, soft pretzels and beverages. A DJ will provide music for dancing. Call 718-456-9104 for tickets.

The Charismatic Prayer Group at Holy Family, Flatlands, will hold their first Annual Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, May 17, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Father Andre Bain, parochial vicar at St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands. Donation: $12.

For tickets, call 718-257-4423.

This Week’s Tip of The TabletTalk Top Hat goes to the altar servers of St. Anselm, Bay Ridge, who coordinated a drive to help children at Mercy First Angel Guardian Campus at 6301 12th Ave. in Brooklyn.

The youngsters placed a crib in the front of the church and asked parishioners for donations of new items for babies and gift cards for teenagers throughout Lent. On April 25, the altar servers loaded jeeps and cars and carried the donations over to the MercyFirst Home for distribution.

A night of fun awaits you at St. Brendan’s annual Card Party to be held on May 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Midwood parish hall. Great food and chances to win beautiful prizes!

Tickets are $20 in advance only. So, call 718-339-2828 soon.

If you enjoy Polish choral music, come to the Polish Singers Alliance of America’s District Convention competition on May 31 at Our Lady of Czestochowa-St. Casimir Church, Park Slope. Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m.

For more information, call Frances at 718-852-6812.

Come to Karaoke Night at Our Lady of Grace, Gravesend, on Saturday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Veltri Hall. The evening is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus - Msgr. Cafiero Council. $25 includes hot buffet, beer, wine and soda. For information, call the rectory at 718-627-2020.

HeartShare Human Services of New York’s Spring Gala and Auction on April 8 raised more than $630,000 for HeartShare programs, according to president and CEO William Guarinello. In its 94th year, HeartShare assists more than 17,000 New Yorkers annually through counseling services, after-school programs, foster care and adoption, energy assistance programs, and support for people with HIV/AIDS. For more information, go to www.heartshare.org.

Come be uplifted by the heavenly voices of the Loboc Children’s Choir at Immaculate Conception School, Jamaica, May 10 at 7 p.m. and May 11 at 3:30 p.m.
These 21 children from the Philippines will share the musical traditons of their country.

General admission is $15, patrons, $50 and sponsors, $100. For more information, call 718-969-8741.

Please send news items and photos of parish events to lbusetti@thetablet.org or call 718-965-7333 ext. 2021.

Special Honor for Msgr. Vazquez

Msgr. Perfecto Vazquez, spiritual director of the diocese’s Cursillo Movement, was honored by members of the Order of Vieira from Galicia, Spain, on March 16, while they were here to march with their bagpipes in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Manhattan. This was only the second time the group had a special “chapter” in New York. Usually they are held in Madrid.
