SFP Senior Earns Presidential Service Award

Bellerose resident, Timothy Quinn, 17, was honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award.

The award is issued by the Presidential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to recognize the best in American spirit, and to encourage all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service and civic participation. The award recognizes individuals of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

Quinn, a parishioner at St. Gergory the Great, Bellerose, participated in the Spirit of Community program this year as a representative of his high school, St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows.

He earned his award by volunteering at: Ozanam Hall, a home for the sick and elderly; Bible Summer School in his parish; a soup kitchen with St. Gregory’s Youth Group; and the Franciscan Youth Movement.

He is also a lector, an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and a retreat leader at St. Francis Prep.
On behalf of the Prep community, Principal Brother Leonard Conway, O.S.F., congratulates Quinn on being a wonderful example of the high caliber of young people in the nation’s schools today.

St. Margaret’s Girls Care for St. Jude’s Kids

Earlier this year, sixth-graders Theresa Armano, Shannon Barrett, Gabriella Gangone, Jasmine Hoxha, Kristen Maurer and Jessica Menna from St. Margaret’s School, Middle Village, worked with their principal, Sister Bridget Olwell, O.S.U., to organize and hold a bake sale, which raised over $500 for the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Way to go!

Are you concerned about the economy?

Do you think the U.S. is heading toward a recession?

Alexis Febles
Nazareth R.H.S.
Senior

Yes. The price of everything is going up and there’s not a lot of money to pay for things. It concerns me because I’m afraid my generation will have to work harder than this one just to buy necessities as prices go up.

I think the U.S. is heading toward a recession and I’m concerned because it could cause a lot of people to lose their jobs. The value of our money is going down and people will eventually have to work harder.

Jordan Edwards
Nazareth R.H.S.
Freshman

Yes. This does concern me and should concern everyone else in this country. Taxes and prices of things are going up. It’s hard for people to find jobs these days. Soon everyone might have to stretch their money to survive.

Amber Joubert
Nazareth R.H.S.
Freshman

I do think the U.S. is heading toward a recession and I’m concerned because my mother doesn’t have a job right now.

Kareena McNeill

Senior

No, I don’t think we’re heading toward a recession. However, if we did have one, I’d be concerned because life is difficult enough without also having to worry about extreme financial problems.

Kudos to the Robotics Team at Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge! Known as the Brooklyn Blacksmiths, the team competed in the annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition at the Jacob Javits Center, April 5-6. Competition was tough but the boys, encouraged by State Sen. Marty Golden, above, finished a respectable 39th out of 65 teams. Way to go!

Two thumbs up for the benevolent Bonnies at Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge! This school year has been all about serving others. The National Honor Society (NHS), under the direction of Rosemarie Izzo and Maryanne DeLuca, collected over 200 gifts of toys and clothes, which were distributed to needy children through Catholic Charities. Over 150 coats were collected and donated to charity by the Lifestream Club, moderated by Breeda Connolly. The Student Council held a “Pennies for Patients” campaign, soliciting donations to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation. And NHS President Emily Hogan collected hundreds of gently used children’s books and gave them to the Sunset Park Library.
