For Lifetime Achievement

Msgr. Austin P. Bennett was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for service to senior men, women, religious and priests at a Gala hosted by SS. Joachim & Anne Residence, an affiliate of Catholic Charities, on April 20 at Gargiulo’s Restaurant. Offering congratulations were, from left, Robert Siebel, executive director of Catholic Charities in the diocese; Msgr. Alfred Lo Pinto, Vicar for Human Services; Msgr. Bennett; and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio.


The School Sisters of Notre Dame’s Educational Center for Women is offering a two-week course, June 11-22, for women who are preparing for the GED. The 27th Annual Buckley’s to Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run is Sunday, May 20, starting at 10 a.m. at Riis Park and ending there. Registration for adults, $20; youth 19 and under, $10. The proceeds benefit HeartShare Human Services. Call 718-422-3347.


Our Lady of the Snows, Floral Park, invites everyone, especially Filipino-Americans, to a May 20 celebration of Flores de Mayo, the May Flower Festival in honor of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, the Philippine Virgin of Antipolo. The novena starts at 3:30 p.m. and will be followed by a procession and 5 p.m. Mass.

The anniversary class of 1957 held a special reception with Prep track alumni from that era.
They honored longtime track coach Jim McHugh by establishing a fully endowed scholarship fund in McHugh’s name.


The Cherish Life Circle was recognized on April 26 for its annual interfaith Candlelight Service for Families of Murder Victims at a National Crime Victims Rights Ceremony held at St. Francis College, Downtown Brooklyn.


The Cherish Life Circle, which opposes the death penalty, was founded by Sister Camille D’Arienzo and the Sisters of Mercy in 1993.

Congratulations to Thomas J. Edwards, of St. Patrick parish, Bay Ridge, who was elected chair of the Lutheran Healthcare Board of Trustees, which he has served for 30 years. Edwards is a retired Verizon senior executive whose extensive service to the community includes trustee of Fontbonne Hall Academy and Grand Marshal of the Bay Ridge St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
