36 Permanent Deacons to Be Ordained

First of two Diaconate Classes Will Be Ordained May 19 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will ordain 36 men as permanent deacons of the diocese on Saturday, May 19, at 5 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica, Sunset Park. A second group of deacons to serve the Spanish-speaking community will be ordained the following weekend. Brief biographies of the first group of ordinands follows:

Perlito B. Alayu, 56, of Our Lady of Mercy parish, Forest Hills, was born in Bagino City, Philippines.


Married to Necitas for 18 years, they have two children. He is employed as a Healthcare-Environmental Manager.
He is active in the parish as a member of the Planning Council, lector, acolyte and extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.


A Mass of thanksgiving will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy, 70-01 Kessel St., Sunday, May 20, at noon.


Alejandro Alick, 54, of St. Jude parish, Canarsie, was born in Manhattan.


Married to María for 18 years, they have six children and five grandchildren. He is employed as an office manager/employee tracking coordinator for the Diocese of Brooklyn.


He is active in the parish with R.C.I.A, as a lector, an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, the Pre-Cana program, and as assistant director of the Prayer Group.

Michael J. Brainerd, 53, of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Ridgewood, is a native of Brooklyn.


Married to Margaret for 29 years, they have one daughter and one grandson. He is employed as a trucking dispatcher.

Alexander Breviario, 54, a member of Our Lady of Grace parish, Howard Beach, was born in Ridgewood.


Married to Bernice for 32 years, they have five children and two grandchildren. He is employed as a technical business consultant.

David J. Ciorciari, 50, of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Maspeth, was born in Queens. He is retired.


Married to Eileen for 25 years, they have two daughters and two grandchildren. He is active in the parish as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and a lector. Also, he’s involved with homebound, nursing home visitations and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Joseph H. Dass, 42, St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, was born in George Town, Guyana.


Married to Ann Marie for 20 years, they have two children. He is employed as a collection manager at Rockrose Development Corporation, a real estate firm.
He is active in the parish as a lector, with altar servers group and youth, and as a CCD teacher.

Victorino P. Elijio, 59, of Our Lady of Mercy parish, Brownsville, was born in Daneriga Town, Belize.

Anthony Favale, 51, a member of St. Finbar Church, Bath Beach, is a native of Brooklyn.


Married to Barbara for 25 years they have three children. He is employed as a senior court clerk at Kings Family Court.


He is active in the parish with Liturgy Committee and as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.


He is also involved in fund-raising activities, and is in charge of the flower and altar society. He is a former member of the home-school association.

Edward S. Gaine, 56, of Our Lady of Angels, Bay Ridge, was born in Brooklyn.


Married to Kathleen for 32 years, they have one son. He is employed as a management consultant.


He is active in the parish with liturgical ministries (extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, lector, and R.C.I.A).

Arthur J. Griffin, 65, of Transfiguration parish, Maspeth, was born in Manhattan.

Edward J. Guster Jr., 59, a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish, Ozone Park, was born in Brooklyn.

Vincenzo M. La Gamba, 60, a member of St. Francis de Sales parish, Belle Harbor, was born in Polistena, Italy.


Married to Isabella for 35 years, they have two children. He is employed as a construction project manager.
He is active in the parish as a lector and he also visits the sick.

Married to Frances for 38 years, they have two children and two grandchildren. He is a retired U.S. Customs agent.
