Silver Jubilarians

Eight of the 10 diocesan priests celebrating their 25th anniversaries of ordination were ordained May 21, 1983 by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn. Father Brown was ordained in Rome. The details of Father Louis’ ordination are contained in his brief biography. The jubilarians are:

Father Francisco J. Ares, who lives at Bishop Mugavero Residence, Douglaston, was born in La Habana, Cuba. He studied at LaSalla School, Marianao; the Salesian Fathers of Guanabacoa; Gral Maceo H.S., Vedado, and San Carlos Seminary, Havana.


He came to the United States in 1980 and entered Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington.
He served at St. Teresa of Avila, South Ozone Park, 1983-84; Our Lady of Fatima, Jackson Heights, 1984-89; St. Rose of Lima, Parkville, 1992-94; Christ the King, Springfield Gardens, 1994-97; St. Rose of Lima, Rockaway Beach, 1997-98; St. Rita, Long Island City, 1998-2000; St. Malachy’s, East New York, 2000-07.

Msgr. John J. Brown, pastor of St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the church on Sunday, June 22, at noon. A reception will follow in the parish hall.


Born in Brooklyn, he attended St. Michael’s School; Cathedral Prep; Cathedral College, Douglaston; and the Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained in Rome on June 25, 1983.


He earned a degree in Canon Law from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.


He served as an assistant at St. Joseph’s, Astoria, 1984-88, and St. Clare, Rosedale, 1988-91. In 1991, he was named to the position of Vice Chancellor which he held until 1997.


He became diocesan Director for Priests Personnel in 1997 and remained in that post until being named pastor of St. Francis de Sales in 2006.


He was named a monsignor in 2000.

Father Edward P. Doran, pastor of St. Gerard Majella parish, Hollis, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the church on the Feast of St. Gerard, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m.


Born in Glen Cove, L.I., he attended St. Patrick School, Glen Cove; St. Mary’s Boys’ H.S., Manhasset, L.I.; Marist College, Poughkeepsie; Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.; St. John’s University, Jamaica; and John XXIII Institute, Mass.


Before ordination, he was a member of the Marist community and taught at Marist H.S., Bayonne, N.J.; was a guidance counselor at Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood, 1966-76; assistant principal at St. Mary’s H.S., Manhasset; and director of the master’s program in counselor education at St. Francis University, Fort Wayne, Ind.


He was an assistant at St. Leo’s, 1984-85; campus minister at Queensborough Community College, Bayside, 1985-89; and campus minister at Brooklyn College, 1989-93.


He was pastor of St. Francis Xavier parish, Park Slope, 1993-99, and in 1999, he was named pastor of St. Gerard Majella.


Father Doran earned his doctorate in counseling from St. John’s University in 1973.

Father Joseph R. Grimaldi, pastor of St. Mark’s, Sheepshead Bay, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the church on Sunday, June 1, at 12:30 p.m. A reception in the school auditorium will follow.


Born in Astoria, he was a member of Immaculate Conception parish. He attended St. Francis of Assisi School, Astoria; Msgr. McClancy M.H.S., East Elmhurst; St. John’s University, Jamaica; and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington.


He served as an assistant at St. John the Evangelist, Park Slope, 1983-86; St. Ephrem, Dyker Heights, 1986-91 and then pursued further studies in Canon Law at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
From 1992 to 2000, he was assigned to The Tribunal as a full-time Associate Judicial Vicar.


In June, 2000, he was appointed as pastor of St. Mark’s, while remaining on The Tribunal. He also serves as administrator of St. Margaret Mary, Manhattan Beach.
He also serves on the Presbyteral Council, the diocesan Real Estate Board, Diocesan Lay Pension Board, Pastors’ Advisory Committee for the diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal, the Adult Allegations Committee, and he is a cluster facilitator.

Father Paul Jervis, pastor of St. Martin de Porres parish, Bedford-Stuyvesant, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving on Sunday, May 25, at 12:30 p.m. at St. Peter Claver Church, Bedford-Stuyvesant. Father John Phalen, CSCV, director of Holy Cross Family Ministry, will preach. A reception will follow in the parish auditorium.
Born in Guyana, South America, he attended the minor seminary of St. Paul in his native country. After immigrating to the U.S., he attended Cathedral College, Douglaston, and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington. He was ordained May 21, 1983 by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at St. James Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.


He served as an assistant at St. Peter Claver, 1983-89; and St. Fortunata, New Lots, 1989-94.


In 1994, he was appointed pastor of St. Paul the Apostle, Corona.


Named administrator of St. Peter Claver in 2006, that parish was united with Our Lady of Victory and Holy Rosary parishes to form St. Martin de Porres in 2007 with Father Jervis as pastor.


He also is the author of “Quintessential Priest,” the biography of Father Bernard J. Quinn. He also is the advocate for the cause of the Canonization of Msgr. Quinn which was begun earlier this year by the diocese.


Father Jervis also has served as an adjunct spiritual director at Cathedral Prep, Elmhurst; chaplain at Bishop Loughlin M.H.S., Fort Greene; and a member of the Diocesan Presbyteral Council.


In 2005, he was honored by the NAACP, Corona-East Elmhurst branch, for outstanding service to the community.


Msgr. Guy Massie, pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle, Bay Ridge, since 2000, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the church.


Born in Greenpoint, he attended St. Cecilia’s School, and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington. He was ordained May 21, 1983 by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at St. James Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.


He served as an assistant at St. Brendan, Midwood, 1983-89; St. Patrick, Bay Ridge, 1989-96; and chaplain at Brooklyn College, 1996-2000.


He studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary, 1993-97, where he earned a masters in Judaic Studies. Since 1997, he has been the chairman of the diocesan Ecumenical and Interfaith Commission.


In 2003, he was named a monsignor.

Father Pascal Louis, an assistant at Holy Cross, Flatbush, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving on Aug. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Cross.


Born in Terrier-Rouge, Haiti, he attended the Oblates Catholic School, Terrier-Rouge; Lycee Philippes Guerrier, Cap-Haitien, Haiti; and Seminary Mayor Notre Dame, Port-au-Prince. He was ordained Aug. 28, 1983 at St. Peter’s Church, Terrier-Rouge.


He ministered as a parish priest and pastor in Haiti for 17 years while also teaching French and Spanish there.
He served the Haitian community at St. Jerome’s and St. Therese of Lisieux, both in East Flatbush, 2000-01; and then was assigned to Holy Cross.


He has done post-graduate studies in pastoral counseling at Fordham University.


He was incardinated into the Brooklyn Diocese last year.

Father Gaetano Sbordone, pastor of St. Dominic, Bensonhurst, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the church on Saturday, May 24, at 5:30 p.m.


Born in Brooklyn, he attended Our Lady of Guadalupe School, Bensonhurst; Cathedral Prep, Brooklyn; Cathedral College, Douglaston; and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington. He was ordained May 21, 1983 by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero at St. James Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.


He served as an assistant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Astoria, 1983-90; Our Lady of Hope, Middle Village, 1990-99; St. Frances Cabrini, Bensonhurst, 1999-2003. In 2003, he was named pastor of St. Dominic.
While at Our Lady of Hope, he also served as a chaplain at St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, and The Mary Louis Academy, Jamaica Estates.

Father Christopher Turczany, pastor of St. Mel, Flushing, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the church on Sunday, May 18, at noon. Refreshments will follow in the schoolyard.


Born in Rockville Centre, L.I., he attended Our Lady of Victory School, Floral Park; St. Pius X Prep Seminary, Rockville Centre; Cathedral College, Douglaston; Maryknoll Novitiate, Hingham, Mass.; the Maryknoll Seminary, Ossining, N.Y.; and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington. He also studied language and culture in Japan during his time with Maryknoll.


He was ordained by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero on May 21, 1983 at St. James Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.


He served as an assistant at St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor, 1983-85; Resurrection-Ascension, Rego Park, 1985-88; Holy Family, Flushing, 1988-95; and St. Robert Bellarmine, Bayside, until being named pastor of St. Mary’s, Long Island City, in 1999.


In 2003, he became pastor of St. Mel’s.

Father Robert J. Whelan, pastor of St. Augustine, Park Slope, will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving at the church on Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. Father Vincent J. Gallo will preach. A reception will follow in the school hall.


Born in Peekskill, he attended St. Ann School, Ossining; St. Camillus, Rockaway Beach; Cathedral Prep, Brooklyn; Cathedral College, Douglaston; and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington.
He did post-ordination studies on counseling at Iona College.


He served as an assistant at St. Sylvester, City Line, 1983-86, and St. Teresa of Avila, South Ozone Park, 1986-91.


From 1991 to 1996, he served as diocesan Vocations Director, also as administrator of St. Pius V parish, Jamaica, 1994-95.


In 1996, he was named pastor of St. Augustine.
He also is marking his 25th year as chaplain of the MTA Police Department. He has been chaplain to the MTA NYC Transit Police since 1998.
