Eight students from St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, were among 75 New York City-area competitors in the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) competition earlier this year. Students were invited to compete based on their submitted research papers. Two SFP students were named national finalists — Emily Casey, who was also named a Siemens Westinghouse semifinalist this year, took first place honors, and Jenna Montalbano, earned fourth place.

Casey’s project determined the role of methylation during microRNA expression, while Montalbano’s project tested her novel theory to explain the observed mass strandings of bottle-nosed dolphins.
Earlier this year, senior James Pickel, who also participated in the JSHS contest, was a 2007 Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist.

All eight students who participated were congratulated by the Prep’s Science Research Program advisor Frances Parziale, SFP ’97, and Maryann Spicijaric, SFP ’84, the Prep’s Science Department Chairperson and leader of the Science Research Program.

Magic and Memories at SJP’s Senior Prom

Dax Armenakis and Joanne Lumaban above, glowed as they entered The Pierre Hotel in Manhattan for their Senior Prom on May 4.

The senior class of St. John’s Prep, Astoria, is grateful to the Prom Committee and senior deans, Kathleen Tierney and Arthur Ferony, whose thorough planning and organization resulted in a wonderful evening for the seniors and their guests. Besides delicious food, dancing, and more dancing, the gala evening included the crowning of the Prom King and Queen,
Claude Moise and Amanda Kirkwood, below.

When life gets busy and the pressure is on,

how do you release your stress?

Shaniqua Simmons
St. Joseph’s H.S.
Freshman

If I’m stressed, I scream and throw things, but never at anyone. It might not be the healthiest way to reduce stress but it’s the most helpful.

Kyle London
Holy Cross H.S.
Sophomore

When life gets too busy, I put on my headphones and listen to music. Music is my life and the best way to get away from everyone and just relax.

Tamika Wellington
St. Joseph’s H.S.
Class of 2007

My stress buster is eating an ice cream sandwich every day. I know it’s not good to eat but it tastes so great.

Sum Tsit (Faith) Lam
St. Joseph’s H.S.
Class of 2007

The best way for me to reduce stress is to read. Books can take us to places we’ve visited or have never been to. This eases any pressure I feel and inspires me to approach problems in a different way.

Yamatha
St. Germain
St. Joseph’s H.S.
Class of 2007

I play the guitar so whenever I get stressed I go in my room and start playing. It makes me forget everything else.

Michael Kasomenakis
Holy Cross H.S.
Class of 2007

Fortunately, life does not reach such a level that requires extra measures to be taken to avoid stress. I dilute any stress I have with humor and work.
