Night at KeySpan to Benefit Catholic Education

BY BERNIE BEGLANE

Once again the Brooklyn Cyclones are batting 1.000 for our diocese in general and the Department of Education in particular.

That is why the members of the New York-Penn League, a farm team of the New York Mets, are staging ‘Going to Bat for Catholic Education Night’ on Wednesday, July 23, at KeySpan Park, Coney Island. Game time is 7 p.m. when the Cyclones will take on the Vermont Lake Monsters.

A portion of the ticket sales will be donated by the Cyclones to Catholic education, in particular for scholarships.

“This is the fourth year that the Cyclones are doing this,” explained Msgr. John J. Bracken, Vicar General, who will toss the ceremonial first pitch that evening.

“There also will be raffle tickets sold that night, and one of the prizes is throwing out the first pitch at a future game.”

Purchasers of a raffle ticket will receive a colored T-shirt.

“There is an ad on the outfield wall delivering a message,” said Msgr. Bracken.

“That ad tells it all – ‘Educating the Whole Student.’ Many people today are not able to pay the tuition, but we still want their children to receive a Catholic education.

“Hopefully people in the diocese will support our efforts by attending the game that night.”

To order tickets, visit www.brooklyncyclones.org, click on the ticket specials tab, click on partnership promotions link and enter the promotional code: Futures.

Fordham Rowing in Right Direction

Ted Bonanno, slowly but surely, is developing a strong women’s crew team at Fordham University.

Proof positive was a third-place finish in the lightweight four competition of the International Rowing Association at Cooper River, Collingswood, N.J.

Loyola Marymount of California finished first, followed by Princeton. Wisconsin took fourth.

Christina Costa was coxswain for the boat of the Jesuit Fathers’ school in the Bronx, while Geta Fleischner was at stroke.

Stephanie Narduzzo, Andrea Francesca and Jennifer Daniels completed the crew.

“We eliminated Massachusetts but then lost in the semi-finals,” explained the coach, who just completed his 19th season at Fordham. He doubles as the coach of the New York Athletic Club, which rose out of Pelham Manor.

Bonanno has earned 12 U.S. National Rowing Association titles as a coach, primarily with the NYAC.

A four-time Olympian (1980-84-88-2000) as a coach, Bonanno also has coached in the Pan American Games.

His Fordham team practices at nearby Roberto Clemente Park, which drew this praise from Ted, who began his own rowing career while a student at St. Helena’s H.S., the Bronx. “It has a great pool and is very convenient to our campus,”

“St. Helena’s is the only school in the borough with a team. I went to Marietta College and competed there.”

It was when Ted’s competitive days were over at Marietta that he turned to coaching.

Rutgers and Columbia, as well as his alma mater, were stops before arriving at Fordham.

Bayside Girls Win First Softball Title

Players and coaches from Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Bayside, proudly display their trophies after defeating St. Mel’s, 7-6, to take the parish’s first ever CYO Bantam softball championship. Affectionately nicknamed “The Blue Bombers,” O.L.B.S. jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after two innings only to have St. Mel’s fight back and tie the score in the third inning. O.L.B.S. pitchers Nicole Donini and Deanna Mayo’s combined efforts kept St. Mel’s from running away with the game. After exchanging a pair of runs midway through the game, the stage was set for the bottom of the seventh. With one out and two on, rookie Nicole Timur singled to drive in the game winning run. Pictured, top row, from left, are: Coaches Mike Mayo and Pat Dennehy, Victoria Daskalis, Catie Sershen, Karina Miranda, Nicole Timur, Nicole Scherer, Coach Jim Sweeney, Lauren Janousek, Christina Egan, Michelle Schwab, Head Coach Joe Donini; middle row, Anna St. Clair, Kristen Janousek, Danielle O’ Rourke, Cynthia Ponce, Kyrsten Baires-Rodriguez, Kelly Jean Gavin; bottom row, Megan Sweeney, Nicolette Vano, Nicole Donini, Deanna Mayo, Carolina Braga, Elizabeth Byrnes.
