Pope and Young People Shine at World Youth Day In Sydney

Marie Elena Giossi Photos

More than 225,000 young people, including over 125 from Brooklyn and Queens, converged on Sydney, Australia, for World Youth Day 2008. During the weeklong event, delegates attended catechetical sessions with bishops from around the the world, as well as socialized and prayed with each other. The highlight of the biennial spectacle was an evening vigil with Pope Benedict XVI, followed the next day by a papal Mass celebrated at Randwick Racecourse. Above, Marilyn Santos, one of the diocesan organizers, displays a WYD T-shirt. Top, many of the young people from Brooklyn and Queens are shown attending a special liturgy with U.S. bishops.
