BK’s Latin Scholars Rock the NLE

Ashley Anglade, a rising junior at Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, scored a perfect paper in the 2007 National Latin Exam, offered under the joint sponsorship of the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League.
She was one of 98 Kearney students who received awards for their outstanding performance in this year’s competition.
Twenty-three students received gold summa cum laude certificates and medals; 36 received silver maxima cum laude certificates; 21 received magna cum laude certificates and 18 received cum laude certificates.
During the second week of March, over 134,000
students from all 50 states and 13 foreign countries participated in the National Latin Examination this year.
According to the American Classical League, participation in the exam has increased each year since its inception in 1978, when approximately 6,000 students participated.

SJP’s Dancers Wow Concert Crowd

Astoria was the place to be for St. John’s Prep’s Spring Concert during May. Hundreds filled the Mater Christi Alumni Auditorium to be entertained by the Symphonic Band, Beginning Bands, Jazz Rock Band, Lab Band, Gospel Choir, Mixed Chorus, African Dance Club, Modern Dance Ensemble, above, and the Spanish Dance Team. The Modern Dance Ensemble performed under the direction of Debra Befumo and Christine Curcio.

Congratulations to Joshua Figueroa who was recently honored at a statewide ceremony for gifted children held by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). Figueroa, who is entering seventh grade at St. Cecilia School, Greenpoint, next month, was recognized for being among the highest scoring participants in the grade two - six division of the CTY Mathematics and Verbal Talent Search, a scaled down college admission-type exam administered last winter.
