Xaverian Goes Soda-Free

Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, has decided that it will no longer serve soda and other sugary treats in its cafeteria.

The Brooklyn school, already known as a trend setter in the culinary field, will only serve milk, juices, and other nutritious beverages as a way of encouraging its students to stay healthy.

“Let’s get the sugar away from the kids – that’s the best way to promote good health and avoid hyperactivity,” said Dr. Salvatore Ferrera, president of Xaverian. “And the best way to do all that is to encourage better dietary habits.”

The New York City public school population has reported a record number of obese students among its enrollees. Some say it can lead to an epidemic of diabetes, asthma, and other juvenile diseases.

Xaverian food service chef Michael Ayoub made headlines last year for serving both the best pizza in any school cafeteria and also for his fashionable but health-conscious fare. Last year, he was the subject of a Tablet feature story.

Ayoub plans to upgrade other components of the food service at Xaverian.
