New Faces Join Diocesan Superintendent's Office

Three new members have joined the staff of the diocesan Office of the Superintendent of School Support Services. They are: Barbara King, director of special projects for assessment and evaluation; Carl Semmler, associate superintendent for Brooklyn West and strategic planning and Alberto Vazquez, associate superintendent for Queens North and strategic planning.

King has taught recently at Good Shepherd School, Marine Park, and St. Francis de Sales, Belle Harbor. Her students from both schools have participated in the New York City Think Quest Challenge.

In 2007, she was named “Think Quest Veteran Coach of the Year.” A resident of Belle Harbor, she is the mother of three.

She is a graduate of St. Edmund H. S., Sheepshead Bay; Wagner College; and she has a M.S. in Education from St. John’s University.

King is a professional member of Kappa Delta Pi and holds New York State Certification in Administration and Supervision. She will be working closely with Diane Phelan, associate superintendent for instruction, evaluation and assessment. During her first year, she will be working with the New York State ELA and Math Assessments for Grades 4-6-8.

Semmler comes to the Office of the Superintendent with an eclectic background that encompasses both business and pedagogy. Most recently, he was a member of the staff at Archbishop Molloy H.S., Briarwood. While there, he worked with the school’s Directory Board Subcommittee on School Mission, various Middle States Accreditation for Growth Committees and a Middle States School Visitation team. He headed its Peer Mentoring Committee and was the Director of the Campus Ministry-Student Services Department. He also taught Religion there.

Prior to his career in education, he worked as a production-promotions manager in both advertising and publishing. He earned his bachelor’s degree at New York University, completed the Pre-Theology Philosophy program at St. John’s University, and earned a M.A. from Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, and a Professional Diploma in School Administration from Queens College.

Vazquez comes to the Office from the Archdiocese of New York, where he worked as a teacher, an assistant principal and most recently as principal of St. John Vianney School. During his time as principal, he worked very closely with the Hispanic community and the parish. Through his efforts at St. John Vianney School, he was able to increase enrollment to over 300 students while enhancing the Catholic identity and the academic program. Recently, he returned from a couple of weeks in Lithuania, where he assisted in setting up a Catholic elementary school.

He has a B.A. in Spanish and Secondary Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College; a M.A. in School Administration and Supervision from Manhattan College and a Professional Diploma in Advanced Leadership Studies from Manhattan College.

Semmler and Vazquez will be working closely with Patricia O’Connor, associate superintendent for Queens South and strategic planning, and Cynthia Casciola Kitts, associate superintendent for Brooklyn East and strategic planning.

“The Office of the Superintendent proactively engages schools, boards, parishes and clusters to ensure that quality Catholic education is sustained across the Diocese of Brooklyn and each school community continually strives to provide an excellent education and works to educate the whole child as it simultaneously advances the evangelizing mission of the Catholic Church,” said Dr. Thomas Chadzutko, Superintendent of School Services.
