Catholic Schools Will Be Beneficiary
Great Irish Fair Returns
After an absence of one year, The Great Irish Fair will return to Brooklyn this fall.
Keyspan Park, Coney Island, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, will be the site for the eagerly anticipated return of The Great Irish Fair, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and 23.
The Great Irish Fair, organized by the Irish American Builders Society for the benefit of Catholic schools of the Diocese of Brooklyn, is a two-day celebration of Irish culture, music and dance.
From 1981 to 2005, thousands of people from all over the metropolitan area visited The Great Irish Fair, which was conducted by Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens. Charities dropped the Fair from its agenda in 2006.
This year, a committee of Irish-Americans, coordinated by Martin Cottingham of Holy Name parish, Park Slope, decided to resurrect the Fair and make Catholic schools the benficiary.
As in the past, there will be continuous live entertainment, Irish import vendors, arts and crafts, rides and games for children and traditional cuisine from some of New York’s finest restaurants.
Cottingham, who is serving as chairman said, “I am honored to be part of the dedicated group of individuals committed to returning this great tradition to Brooklyn. Catholic schools are responsible for having nurtured the minds and spirits of some of New York’s most renowned leaders. We are determined that the Catholic schools of the Diocese of Brooklyn remain an integral part of the community. See you at the Fair!”
