Natl. Prize for Genesis History Project

James Marlow, a student in the Genesis Program at Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, placed first nationwide in the junior individual exhibit category of the National History Day competition earlier this year. He received a gold medal and $1,000 prize for his project, “Willowbrook State School: From Atrocities to Sweeping Reforms,” which focused on the state-run institution for mentally challenged children in Staten Island, which was exposed in the 1970s for its inhumane conditions and abuse of students by the staff.
Other Genesis winners included Caitlin Palumbo and Danielle Gordon of Howard Beach, who won the Ancient Order of Hibernians Special Award for their presentation, “Ireland’s Daughters as Domestic Servants: The Bridge Between the Tragedy of the Famine and the Triumph of Success in America.” Sisters Kristie and Kaitlyn Coleman were awarded the Rachel Carson Centennial Prize for their exhibit, “The Trials and Tribulations of the Riverkeepers’ Fight to Protect the Hudson River,” and were finalists in the competition. Jillian Doyle and Meagan Freeze earned a second-place medal for the New York State History Day competition for their performance, “Spinning for a Living: A Lowell Mill Girl’s Day,” and Julia Buff also received a second-place medal at the N.Y.S. History Day for her documentary, “Winning the Race to the Moon: Lasting Value or Passing Moment.”
All of the students were recognized by Congressman Vito Fossella, at right with national winner, James Marlow on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
