New Korean Memorial at Maryknoll
Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk of Seoul, South Korea, blesses a memorial to Maryknoll’s Korean mission work at the Maryknoll headquarters in Maryknoll, N.Y., on Sunday, Sept. 30. The granite replica of the gate to the city of Pyongyang was a gift from the Korean Catholic Church. It contains the names of the many Maryknollers who have served there during the past 80 years.

The Diocese of Brooklyn was represented by a contingent of more than 500 parishioners from St. Paul Chong Ha Sang, Flushing. Deacon Paul Chin of St. Paul’s, left, coordinated the local participation and assisted at the altar.

Presented to Maryknoll on the 80th anniversary of the 1927 founding of the Diocese of Pyongyang, at that time a Maryknoll mission in North Korea, the monument represents the gratitude of the Korean people for the work of Maryknollers in building up what is now a thriving indigenous Church, based mainly in South Korea.
