Xaverian H.S. Kicks Off 50th Year

Alumnus Father Joseph Gancila distributes Communion at Xaverian’s opening Mass of the school year.
Young men wore their best polo shirts and slacks for the opening Mass of the school year at Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, on Sept. 10, the first full day of classes.
The all-boys Catholic high school, founded and sponsored by the Xaverian Brothers, celebrates its 50th year this fall. As the school community commences the golden jubilee, it’s also embracing a new academic structure, having shifted from a conventional high school model to a small college governance over the summer.
Graduates from the 1960s sat alongside Dr. Sal Ferrera, school president, and amid the current student body at the opening liturgy. Father Joseph Gancila, parochial vicar at St. Bernadette, Dyker Heights, class of ’87, distributed Communion to his fellow Clippers.
Xaverian is planning a 50th Anniversary Dinner Dance on Oct. 20, 7 p.m. at the school. RSVP by Oct. 13. Contact Robert Oliva, director of Alumni Relations, 718-836-7100 ext. 118 or e-mail roliva@xaverian.org.
Bonnies Ready to Serve Peers

New extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, lectors and altar servers were installed at Fontbonne Hall Academy’s opening school Mass in Bay Ridge. Msgr. Robert Romano, school chaplain, Sister Dolores Crepeau, CSJ, principal, Gilda King, assistant principal and Sister Dorothy Zachorowski, campus minister, gather with the Bonnies who have dedicated themselves to serving the school community at Masses throughout the school year.

I will always remember using my RipStik. It is a skateboard on two wheels. I like riding it because it makes me feel like I’m surfing a wave or riding a snowboard.

I will always remember a baseball tournament that I played in. It was in Reading, PA. Even though we lost all three games, each game was very close and I had a good time with my teammates.

What I’ll remember most was a family trip to Philadelphia. I was in the room where the Declaration of Independence was signed. I also ran up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, just like Rocky.
