SJP Frosh Key Into

Combination Locks

Swift fingers spin the dial... 23 right… 18 left… 11 right… and then an anxious ninth-grader waits for that gratifying click, until he realizes his locker is the next one over.

Hopefully, freshmen at St. John’s Prep, Astoria, avoided that embarrassment as they learned how to open the combination locks on their new school lockers. Denise Hillig, chairperson of the Computer Science and Business Department, demonstrated how the mechanisms work and rescued any frustrated freshmen. These girls, at right, are all smiles now that they figured out how to secure their lockers.

Christ the King R.H.S. Welcomes Prospective Class of 2012

Christ the King R.H.S., Middle Village, opened its doors to over 460 prospective students during its Sept. 30 Open House. Over 1,800 people experienced the atmosphere of warmth and discipline that has encouraged academic excellence as well as moral responsibility among students for the last 45 years. The day included school tours, classroom lectures and displays from various athletic teams and clubs. The new Performing Arts Club made a particularly nice showing.

Chairman of the Board Senator Serphin R. Maltese and the school mascot, above, welcomed John Honan from St. Margaret’s, Middle Village.

Youth Views

Text messages were key to keeping St. John’s University’s student body informed when a distraught student walked around the Queens campus with a rifle recently. Would a school’s security system influence your decision to attend the school? Why or why not?

Noele Charles
St. Saviour H.S.
Senior

I didn’t really care about security systems before but now with school shootings on the rise, it is very important to me.

Maryam E.F. Razaz
St. Saviour H.S.
Freshman

A school’s security system would not influence my decision to attend the school. Problems always happen regarding security. It’s best to base decisions about a school on its education and trust the school’s ways. Security is important but sometimes you cannot stop what is meant to happen.

Theresa Geraci
St. Saviour H.S.
Senior

Yes, it most definitely would. Being that most/all colleges are rather large, I would like to feel very safe and secure, almost as if someone was watching over me. Knowing that a college has a strong security system would definitely be a plus to go there.

Kessie Blanchard
St. Saviour H.S.
Junior

Yes and no. Yes, I want to be safe attending the school of my choice and not worry about personal safety. And no, because I want to go to a school with a great curriculum and an active campus scene even if their security is a little bit lackluster.

Alyssa Alaimo
St. Saviour H.S.
Junior

A school’s security system would definitely influence my decision to attend any school. If a school didn’t have a great or adequate security system then it would not be one of my top choices. My parents are always worried about my safety and that comes first.

Chelsea Thompson
St. Saviour H.S.
Sophomore

Security is very important to me. I like to feel safe and as if nothing could harm me. Campus security would influence my choice of school.
