Christians to Dialogue in Series on Prayer Channel

Two priests of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn will host a five-week series of cable television programs on 40 years of interfaith relations with the Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican/Episcopalian and Methodist churches during October and November.

Msgr. Guy A. Massie, secretary for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs and pastor of St. Andrew the Apostle Church, Bay Ridge, and Msgr. John J. Strynkowski, rector of St. James Cathedral Basilica in Downtown Brooklyn, will interview representatives of the four faiths on the Prayer Channel (Channel 97 on Time Warner Cable and Channel 30 on Cablevision).

The first in the series of half-hour taped conversations, on the Orthodox Church, will air Saturday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 17, both at 6:30 p.m. The Rev. Eugene Pappas of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America and the Very Rev. Michael Ellias of St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church in Bay Ridge will be the guests.

The Lutheran Church will be featured in the second program, which will air Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m. The guest will be the Rev. Craig Miller of the Ecumenical Lutheran Church of America and pastor of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge.

For the third program, on the Anglican/Episcopalian Church, the Rev. Thomas Visconti of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island will be interviewed. It will air Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. and the Saturdays of Nov. 3 and 24 at 6:30 p.m.

The Rev. Charles L’Heureux, Jr., of the Queens Federation of Churches in Richmond Hill will discuss Methodism on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 10, at 6:30 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m.

The fifth program will be a live, one-hour, call-in show on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m. All the guests from the previous programs will be on hand to answer calls. A taped repeat will be shown Saturday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m.

Msgr. Massie said the series, whose title is “One in Christ,” is designed to show how dialogue among the faith groups is contributing to Christian unity.
