Up to Par: Golfers Tee Off to Benefit Catholic Charities
BY BERNIE BEGLANE
The golf clubs have been…or are about to be…put away for another season.
This outstanding weather cannot continue, correct?
All of which means you are making plans for 2008, right?
With that in mind, we have a date – Thursday, June 19 – for you to mark on your calendar or put in your book.

At the Catholic Charities Golf Outing were, from left, Father Jamie Gigantiello, Ralph Covelli, Msgr. Alfred LoPinto, and Alfred Lepore. |
The event? The 36th Annual Catholic Charities Golf Classic at the North Hills Country Club, Manhasset, one of the most beautiful courses in the metropolitan area.
And Father Jamie Gigantiello, pastor of Mary Queen of Heaven parish, Mill Basin, cannot wait.
Not that our good friend can shoot par. Far from it. Father Jamie is the moderator (this will be his fourth year) of the Classic that has vital funds for many struggling individuals and families throughout Brooklyn and Queens.
“One example of the good that is accomplished,” began Father Jamie, “is housing. Efforts to preserve 1,000 units of affordable housing for low-income seniors are underway.
“Efforts also are directed to preserve 550 units of affordable housing for low income families.
“We remind one and all that Catholic Charities and those who benefit from its services are grateful to the volunteers and donors – both individual and business – who support the Classic.”
As cited above, the Classic was started 36 years ago.
“I had been attending the outing for 10 years when I was asked to become moderator,” continued Father Gigantiello.
“When I accepted, I knew that I was following in the footsteps of two fine priests, Msgr. Anthony Baretta and Msgr. Joseph Calise.
“They were deeply committed to making this event a very successful one.”
Each year an individual who has been diligent in making the Classic a success is honored. Last year Philip Kelly, Jr., was cited.
Father Jamie also mentioned Ralph Covelli and Alfred Lepore for their 35 years of service.
“Their many and varied contributions to the work of Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Brooklyn have helped many needy people to better their quality of life,” he stated.
“Rice Volpe and Gary Arcieri, who served as co-chairmen last year, were a major support to me.
“I truly feel privileged to help in some small way to promote the mission of Catholic Charities. May God continue to bless this organization and the wonderful work it accomplishes.”
As for the honor bestowed upon him, Kelly explained, “For three generations dating back to the 1930s, my family has been blessed with the opportunity to serve and support the great works of Catholic Charities.
“I look forward to continuing this support for years to come.”
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, our diocesan bishop, said, “I would be hard pressed to measure the number of lives that have been touched by the generous support of the Catholic Charities Classic over the last 35 years.
“It is through that kind of compassionate spirit that we are able to assist those who come to us in time of need.”
Once again, June 19 is the date for 2008 and North Hills Country Club is the course.
As Father Jamie concluded, “We raised $75,000 last June. What’s the name of that old television show, ‘Can You Top This?’”
