Mannarino, principal of Christ the King R.H.S., Middle Village, above, far left, congratulates his school’s National Hispanic/African American Recognition Program Scholars, from left, Christian Rodriguez, Jessica Guarneri and David Serrano along with Melanie Thomas, guidance counselor. Brandon Alfred, left, was also recognized by the College Board.

The National Hispanic/African American Recognition Program is a College Board program that provides national recognition of the exceptional academic achievements of Hispanic and African American high school seniors and identifies them for postsecondary institutions.

Students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors and by identifying themselves as Hispanic or African American. This year more than 196,000 PSAT/NMSQT takers nationwide identified themselves as Hispanic or African American and more than 4,000 of those students have been recognized as National Hispanic/ African American Scholars.

For the past four years, St. Francis Prep has been a member of the NYS Science Honor Society, which demands excellence from its members. Student membership is by invitation only. It is dependent upon outstanding science grades and a willingness to give service in the subject area.

Singh, Kuriakose and Fauvelle, above, were chosen by SFP’s Science Department to serve as officers of the school chapter.

School President Ray Nash salutes Geiger, who maintains academic excellence at Bishop Ford. She also volunteers at her church, Our Lady of Czestochowa-St. Casimir, Bush Terminal, and lives in Sunset Park with her parents.

November Contest Opportunities for Scouts and Students

• Boy Scouts across the nation are asked to help prepare for the Boy Scouts of America’s 100th Anniversary by designing a memorable logo that captures the true spirit of Scouting. Every submission must be accompanied by: an entry form; a design that includes, at a minimum, “Boy Scouts of America” or “BSA,” “100 Years of Scouting” or “1910-2010,” the theme “Celebrating the Adventure. Continuing the Journey.”; a statement, 100 words or less, explaining how the design captures the true spirit of Scouting; and confirmation of eligibility.

Every Scout (Cub, Webelo, Boy, Venturer or Eagle) who enters the national logo contest will receive a special patch and certificate from the Boy Scouts of America National Council. Five winning entries will be chosen and announced at the 2008 Boy Scouts of America Annual Meeting. Complete details and entry guidelines are available at www.scouting.org/100years. Submissions due: Nov. 30.

• “Put Away Your Sword,” drawn from St. John’s Gospel (18: 1-11), is the theme of the 2007 Maryknoll Student Essay Contest for students in grades six to 12. Students are asked to describe a situation in the world today or in their own lives in which Jesus would say, “Put away your sword.” In 500-750 words, students must explain what they’d do to follow Jesus’ command to promote peace instead of violence.

Winners will receive nearly $3,000 in scholarships, as well as coverage in Maryknoll magazine and on the Maryknoll website. Instructions are available at www.maryknoll.org/essay. Entries due: Nov. 30.
