Sister Margaret White, D.W., 81, died on Nov. 13, in Ruskin, Florida.
Born in Elmhurst, she was a graduate of Bishop McDonnell H.S., Brooklyn, and entered the Daughters of Wisdom in 1945. She took the religious name, Sister Mary Pieta, and made her first profession of vows in 1946.
In New York, she taught at St. Mary Gate of Heaven School, Ozone Park, 1946-52, and the Academy of St. Joseph, Brentwood, 1983-91.
She also ministered in Canada and California.
She served as community affairs and finance manager at Mary and Martha House, a local shelter for homeless and abused women in Ruskin, Florida, from 1991-2000. She retired in 2000 due to failing health, but continued to minister and volunteer in the local area.
Sister Mary Schutte, S.C., a member of the Sisters of Charity, Halifax, for 64 years, died Nov. 6 at Mt. St. Vincent, Wellesley Hills, Mass. She was 86.
Formerly known as Sister Mary Conrad, she taught first- through sixth-grade at St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Jamaica, 1944-57.
She later lived at St. Francis Convent, Fresh Meadows, received training in pastoral ministry at the Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston, and ministered at St. Mary Star of the Sea, Far Rockaway, and St. Andrew Avellino, Flushing.
She served as pastoral minister and then chaplain at Booth Memorial Hospital, Flushing, 1989-97; did volunteer clerical work at the Sisters of Charity branch office, Middle Village, 1997-98; and was chaplain at Ozanam Nursing Home, Bayside, 1998-99. She retired in 2005.
Burial was in the Sisters of Charity plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham, Mass.
Albert J. Stankus, the father of Father Gregory A. Stankus, pastor of SS. Simon and Jude parish, Gravesend, died Nov. 12.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 17 at SS. Simon and Jude Church.
Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.
Sister Mary Martina Nolan, G.N.S.H., a member of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart for 76 years, died Nov. 2 in St. Joseph Manor, Meadowbrook, Pa. She was 91.
Born as Catherine Ann Nolan, she entered the order in 1932 and took the religious name of Sister St. Martina.
She taught at Blessed Sacrament, Jackson Heights, 1955-58; St. Joan of Arc, Jackson Heights, 1987-90; and St. Leo’s, Corona, 1941-49. She also was principal at Our Lady of Fatima, Jackson Heights, 1977-85, and St. Mary’s, Long Island City, 1969-76.
Sister retired to live at Our Lady of Fatima Convent in 1990.
In 1994, she moved to the motherhouse in Yardley, Pa.
