Five Boys Named to N.Y.S. All-Star Basketball Team

BY BERNIE BEGLANE

Something new was added to the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic which opened the local schedule at Madison Square Garden.

Twenty-one players, 10 of them from the ranks of the CHSAA, were selected to the New York State High School All-Star team. And of those 10, half are from schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Ryan Pearson, a six-six senior forward, and Erving Walker, a five-eight senior guard, both standouts at Christ the King R.H.S., Middle Village, were honored.

As were Kevin Phillips, a six-seven senior forward from Bishop Loughlin M.H.S., Clinton Hill, and his teammate, Jayvaughn Pickston, a six-six sophomore forward.
Sylvan Landesberg, a six-six senior forward from Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, completes the quintet of diocesan selections.

Pearson and Walker already have accepted scholarships to college, thus leaving themselves open to concentrate on not only basketball, but also studies, in their final year.

Which will please veteran coach Bob Oliva to no end.

Headed for George Mason University is Pearson, while Walker is going to the University of Florida.

Pearson’s coach with the Patriots will be Jim Larranaga while Walker will be playing for Billy Donovan, who made quite a name for himself at St. Agnes H.S., Rockville Centre, and Providence College.

Kahiol Green, coach of Loughlin, will be losing Phillips to Drexel, which is coached by Bruiser Flint.

Pickston, of course, has two more years to go before worrying about college.

By the way, he is the only underclassman selected of the five honorees from our diocese.

Holy Cross' Sylvan Landesberg

As for Landesberg, Sylvan will enroll at Virginia where the Cavaliers are coached by Dave Leitao. This after playing for Paul Gilvary at Holy Cross.

Now for the other players from the ranks of the CHSAA.

Rice of Manhattan, coached by Maurice Hicks, had three players picked.

Kemba Walker, a six-feet senior guard; Chris Fouch, an inch taller and a senior forward, and Durand Scott, a six-four junior forward comprise the trio.

Walker will go to Connecticut where the Huskies are coached by Jim Calhoun.

Fouch has not reached a decision on his choice, and Scott has a year to go.

Completing the CHSAA players cited were Darryl Bryant and Omari Lawrence, both of St. Raymond’s, the Bronx, where the coach is Oliver Antigua.

Bryant, six-one and a senior guard, will continue his career in the Big East Conference at West Virginia where Bob Huggins is the coach.

Omari is a six-three junior forward.

Ron Naclerio, veteran coach of Benjamin Cardoza, Bayside, and a graduate of St. John’s University where he played baseball, saw one of his players, six-foot senior guard Trinity Fields, honored.

Boys and Girls High School, Brooklyn, which is coached by Ruth Lovelace, landed six-six senior forward David Imes and six-five Patrick Jackson, a senior guard, as honorees.

The latter is going to play for Fred Hill at Rutgers.

Another Brooklyn school, Lincoln, which is coached by Dwayne Morton, claimed two berths on the team.

They are Justin Green, a six-six senior forward, and six-six Lance Stephenson, the same height and a junior guard.

Bleacher Preachers

Bleacher Preachers, the live call-in cable TV show seen on The Prayer Channel, will air its final three shows on Mondays, Dec. 3, 10, and 17, 7 to 8 p.m.

The show, hosted by Tablet Editor Ed Wilkinson, features the comments of Fathers Kevin Sweeney and Robert Keighron.

Xavier Cops CHSFL ‘A’ Championship

Xavier H.S. of Manhattan captured the Catholic High School Football League’s Division A title with a 45-33 win over St. John the Baptist, West Islip, L.I.
Trailing 27-14 with 7:20 to play, the Knights scored 31 pts. in the closing minutes to secure the championship.

Xavier, competing in its 125th season of interscholastic football, finished with a 9-1 record. The school last won a divisional title in 1996.

The champs, who count many residents of Brooklyn and Queens among their number, have no home field for practice or games. Coached by Chris Stevens, they hold their practices on public fields in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
