SJU’s Red Storm Faces Indiana in NCAA Quarterfinals

BY BERNIE BEGLANE

St. John’s University’s highly successful soccer team – the record is 18-2-3 – receives a stern test today, Saturday.

Coach Dave Masur, who is in his 18th season, pits his Red Storm against Indiana in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

St. John’s is seeded third, highest ever, in the competition.

Nelson Becerra
Joel Gustafsson

Game time is 5 p.m. at Belson Stadium on the campus of the Vincentian Fathers’ school in Jamaica.

A victory by Masur and Co., which was blanked by South Florida, 1-0, in overtime in the Big East Conference finals in Tampa, would mean a berth in the Final Four.

That competition takes place in Frisco, TX.

To gain the quarters, Masur and Co. defeated California-Irvine, 3-1, at home where they are 11-0-0 this season.

Sverre Wegge Gundhus, Joel Gustafsson and Trevor Chiduku each had a goal.

In Big East play, Masur was selected as Coach of the Year, marking the third time he has received that honor.

Nelson Becerra, who had seven goals and five assists for the season, was honored as Midfielder of the Year.

Defender of the Year honors went to Gustafsson.

Neal Kitson was No. 1 in the conference with a .918 in goalie saves.

He had 15 outright shutouts and combined on another.

And Kitson will have to produce another one this time and hope that the Red Storm can score since the Hoosiers have yet to allow any goals in the playoffs.

Please remember Father Thomas Concagh, C.M., chaplain of the New York Mets, in your prayers. He is seriously ill in Philadelphia.

He succeeded Father Danny Murphy, now pastor of St. Saviour parish, Park Slope, at Shea Stadium.

Bishop Ignatius Catanello, auxiliary bishop and pastor at Holy Family, Flushing, celebrates the Mass at Shea now.

St. John’s Red Storm held off a late charge by the Terriers of St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, to win 69-61. The Jamaica school now leads the school series 63-12.

D.J. Kennedy’s 19 points led the Red Storm, which never trailed, at Carnesecca Arena on Monday night.

Ricky Cadell had 15 points for the Terriers who last defeated the Red Storm in the 2004-05 season.

Great Season for OLPH Celtics Soccer Team
