Parish Tree Lighting In Flatbush

Linda Busetti Photos

For the third year, Holy Cross parish, Flatbush, is lighting up Church Ave. with a three-story tall Christmas tree, angels and a Nativity scene for all the community to enjoy. When city buses move down Church Ave., the riders lean toward the windows facing Holy Cross Church, to enjoy the beautifully lit Christmas tree and manger scene.

The parish is able to share this Celebration of Light thanks to a generous gift from Maimonides Medical Center.

The parish lit up Flatbush again on Sunday night, Dec. 2 after Lessons and Carols performed by the parish’s four choirs – Haitian, English senior, English youth and Spanish in the church.

Msgr. Joseph Malagreca presided. Many of the people at Holy Cross are natives of Caribbean nations and Msgr. Malagreca is liaison to the Haitian and Hispanic Charismatic communities.

Father Donelson Thevenin, parochial vicar, started the tradition of having a Christmas display at Holy Cross. He led a team of about 50 volunteers, including confirmation class students as a service project, who helped to untangle lights and decorate the area facing Church Ave. and along Veronica Pl.

On the night of the lighting, Msgr. Malagreca invited City council member Mathieu Eugene to press the button to switch on the lights.
