War Rages On in Iraq

As the war in Iraq continued, the U.S. bishops called the present situation “unacceptable and unsustainable” and urged a “responsible transition” leading to the end of the fighting. The flight of hundreds of thousands of Christians from Iraq could lead to the end of a Christian presence there, they said. At right, a U.S. soldier rests near a statue of Mary outside a church in the Dora district of Baghdad, Iraq. Above, U.S. soldiers pray during a memorial service for Pfc. Allen Jaynes from Texas at a U.S. Army camp in Baghdad, Iraq, Jan. 26. Jaynes was killed by a roadside bomb, and four of his colleagues were wounded.
